Suggestions for Hiking Tours

Route: Schachen - Meilerhütte - Oberreintal - Reintalangerhütte - Knorrhütte - Zugspitze

The easiest way, called the way of the king (Königsweg), to get to the Schachen (mountain lodge and mountain castle King Ludwig II., built in 1871) starts at Elmau. From there you will reach the Schachen in about 3,5 hours. Close to the castle you will find the alpine garden, with flowers of the alpine region. There are guided tours through the castle at 11.00 a.m. and 2.00 p.m.
Another steeper way, called Kälbersteig, to the Schachen is starting right behind the gorge "Partnach"; time to get to the Schachen about 4,5 hours.
From the Schachen you will get to the mountain lodge Meilerhütte in about 1,5 hours.
Take the same way back to the Schachen and from there on descent the secured track down to the high valley Oberreintal, about 1 hour.
Reaching the valley you follow the track to the mountain lodge Reintalangerhütte, about 2 hours. Overnight stay at the Reintalangerhütte.

The next day you follow the way through the valley to the mountain lodge Knorrhütte (2,5 hours) and then further up to the mountain restaurant Sonn Alpin (1,5 hours) at the glacier of the Zugspitze. From there you could visit the peak of the Zugspitze or take the coq wheel train back down to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

To follow the route you go back down to the Knorrhütte and then turn to the track crossing over the "Gatterl" to Ehrwald in Austria (about 4 hours). The path crosses the glacier almost horizontal. From Ehrwald you can tale the train back to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

At all of the mountain lodges you will have the possibility for overnight stays (beds or mattresses). If you will be hiking with a group we recommend to reserve places at the mountain lodges.
