The hunting lodge "Schachen" is located 5628 ft. above Garmisch-Partenkirchen underneath the Dreitorspitze (8089 ft.) in the Wetterstein range. King Ludwig II chose the mountain solitude to erect his hunting lodge 1871. The wooden house, looking like a Swiss chalet in the exterior, has inside on the first floor a magnificent hall furnished in Moorish style. The livingrooms and the bedrooms were in the ground floor. The guests reached the chalet on horse drawn carriages or sleighs along the "king´s road" (Königsweg).

The itinerary from Garmisch-Partenkirchen across the worth seeing Partnach gorge (Partnachklamm), the "Steilen hut" (Steilenhütte), the "calves path"(Kälbersteig) takes about 4 to 5 hours; from Schloß Elmau (parking facility) along the "king's road" you need approximately 3 hours.

Every year on the 25th of August, the aniversary of king´s Ludwig birth, a mass is celebrated at the lodge. Not far from the castle, a few meters above the timber line is a botanical garden, laid out 1900, with approximately 1500 different alpine flowers and plants. This garden is another unusual attraction at this altitude. Try to visit it in the last week of July or the first one of August. At that period you will be able to admire the late spring blossoms and the early summer flowers.

The Schachen refuge (Schachenhaus) offers for hikers 20 beds, distributed in single rooms and dormitories, and 80 mattresses. Twice a day, at 11.00 am and 2.00 pm the hunting lodge can be visited, upon requirement even oftener. For further information please call (08821) 2996.
