Lago Maggiore, surrounded
by the vast alpine mountain chain of Monte Rosa is bordered by both
Italy and Switzerland. In fact at about 68meters long the Maggiore lake
(Lago Maggiore in Italian) remains relatively mild even during the
winter months and as a result, the fauna and flora surrounding it are
almost like the medetirranean.
In Switzerland the canton (province) of Ticino is shore on Lago Magiore
whilsin Italy the provinces of the Piedmonte and Lombardy regions are
prominent. Nonetheless the Swiss country b0orders 42 KM of the 160 or so
KMS of coastline.
However Lago Maggiore has been and is known as the heart of the Italian
lake district.a nd is listed and sold as ideal for family vacations,
activities, exploration and confrences. Called by the tourist oiffice of
Ascona and Locarno as "a mediterannean world in an alpine setting" Lago
Maggiore offers visitors everything, incouding an all but guaranteed
climate, that any holidaymaker would enjoy. Maggiore has it all for the
visitor including golf, bicycle rides and rental and even train rides.
Italian is the major language, even in Switzerland as the lake lies
directly on the Italian speaking region of that country
However Maggiore is the start of the Italian lake regrion. mAlthough you
may be of the variety that owns or rents a boat on this magnificent body
of water, Magiore offers mpore affordable transport from town to town as
well. This is by Ferry of course and they are fast and frequent. Please
take a trip no matter what your style of transport as the Islans are
worth seeing.. |
